A large library like mine, however, can still be a drag on the Photos app, slowing down performance to the point where a quick edit in theory becomes frustratingly laborious in practice. If you have divided a large photo library into small, more manageable libraries, Photos for Mac makes it easy to work multiple libraries. When you first set up Photos for Mac, it asks you to choose a library. This becomes your default library, or the System Photo Library in Apple's parlance. You might logically conclude that Photos always opens the System Photo Library unless otherwise instructed, but the app instead opens the Last Opened library. Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET.

To choose a different library than the library you last opened, hold down the Option key when launching Photos. It will open a dialogue window before opening Photos, asking you to Choose Library or Create New. You can't merge libraries using Photos; you can only view them separately.

If you decide at some point you'd like to pick a different photo library as your default library for Photos, you can do so by going to the General tab of Preferences and click the button Use as System Photo Library. Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET.

If you are using iCloud Photo Library with the Photos app, it will work only with the System Photo Library. That is, your secondary libraries will not upload photos to iCloud to share across your iOS devices and OS X machines. If you want to get all of your photos and videos in iCloud, however, you can designate another library as your System Photo Library and then enable iCloud Photo Library. Before Windows XP, My Documents was situated in the WINDOWS Desktop 'folder'. In Windows XP, My Documents was no longer inside the WINDOWS Desktop 'folder' even though it could be shown on the Desktop. It was relocated to be inside Documents & Settings (user name keyed in), and it took me a while to figure where it was located back then. Now in Windows 7, My Documents has once again been relocated to be inside Users (user name keyed in).

It can still be shown on the desktop and can also be shown in My Library. My question isn't so much so about the My Documents folder but rather the My Libraries folder. Without the 'up to higher-level directory' button (which was available in Windows XP), it's a rather difficult task to find the destination folder in which the My Libraries folder resides in. Does anyone know where it is located in? On a sidenote, does anyone know how I can enable the 'up to higher-level directory' button, which was available in Windows XP?

It appears that the Library system used in 7 is to allow someone to attch various folders to the library rather than having all the documents stored in one place. This is useful for me when I come close to filling a first drive I tend to get a second and put all new documents in there (Ususally can't be bothered to move all the old stuff too). When I do this in 7 I can link the new folder to the appropriate Library and when I navigate Libraries It will show everything instead of just one parent folder. Also when I restored all my backed up documents from the old instalation I put them in a folder called data. I then atteched the relevent sub folders to my Library.

I wouldn't worry about the 'Up Directory' function if you think of this system as a pre set Search Folder. Within Itunes is the Apps directory and other data where 'album name' doesn't make sense. I want it to display as a non-music directory. There doesn't.
